This circle honours Gordon Smith, esteemed former faculty member and world-renowned painter whose significant contribution as an artist and educator spans 60 years. Born June 18, 1919 in East Brighton, England, he continues to be a passionate champion of arts education who works in his studio every day, pushing his practice in new directions. A painter, printmaker, sculptor, and teacher, Gordon Smith was an influential Faculty member of the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr University) from 1946 – 1956.
His many major awards include the Order of Canada (1996) and the Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts (2007).
