Vision

This vision statement applies to the broad range of educational and learning services offered by Emily Carr University of Art + Design to the British Columbian, Canadian and International communities.

Vision

  • As the only specialized Art and Design University in BC, Emily Carr’s vision is to be internationally known as one of the top global schools for its undergraduate and graduate programs in Media Arts, Design and Visual Arts;
  • Our goal is to create a multi–disciplinary environment where learners, community members and industry partners learn applied approaches to creative problem solving, within a project oriented curriculum, that covers all aspects of the creative sector and the creative industries;
  • Our vision is to provide learners with the tools and critical knowledge they need to become engaged citizens and drivers of the creative economy;
  • We are innovators in applied research with over three hundred industry and community partners. Emily Carr will be recognized for the fluid manner in which it responds to partnership requests and in its capacity to translate new ideas into practical outcomes;
  • Emily Carr is a learning community with a provincial mandate to provide access to the creative arts to thousands of students from all walks of life. Our vision is to contribute to the growth of the creative sector and the creative industries across British Columbia and around the world;
  • Emily Carr will be regarded in the community and by government as the hub for the new knowledge economy in BC (creative industries are expected to contribute $793.1 million in GDP/year by 2030).

Strategic Directions

  • An integrated and sustainable campus environment, with on–site residences to attract the best domestic, Canadian and International students to Emily Carr centred on a learning community devoted to best practices in Visual Arts, Media, Design and Applied Research;
  • A campus that focuses on life–long learning and pedagogical innovation through the use of classroom and studio teaching and new technologies that provide on and off–campus opportunities through on–line courses, residential and low residency masters programs and to produce graduates who are empowered creators, critical thinkers and innovators;
  • A new campus with an even more dynamic curriculum that responds to the changing conditions of knowledge production, industry innovation and technological change and that supports excellence and innovation in teaching and learning;
  • A new campus that cultivates and strengthens community and industry participation in the creative sector and that advances the use of new technologies to improve the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of creative learning environments;
  • A new campus that facilitates and increases the potential for alumni to be employed after completing their studies — 92% of Emily Carr grads are employed after completing their degrees and we would like to raise that to an even higher level through the leverage that the new campus will offer us;
  • A new campus that is built to the highest standards with design features unique to the mandate of the university, that is inspired by design excellence and that promotes an integrated and comprehensive approach to the goals of the university;
