Global Students | Emily Carr Recruitment
To bring you this article, Emily Carr Communications reached out to Ehren Seeland, Coordinator of Student Recruitment.
Ehren answers questions and shares striking pictures of her travels around the world, as she meets with international students who are interested in studying at Emily Carr University.
ECC: What is your most memorable international recruiting experience?
Ehren: The best moments revolve around connecting face-to-face with prospective students, counselors, parents, Emily Carr alumni, embassy staff and recruiters across the globe. With relationship building, in-person meetings are crucial and I have been both inspired and humbled with how generously people have welcomed us into their respective pockets of the world. Also, that time I ate spicy grasshoppers in Mexico City – tastier than expected.
ECC: What is your best advice for a prospective international student?
Ehren: Compile a research checklist when looking into post-secondary institutions so that you can contrast and compare your findings. If you are considering studying outside of your home country, make sure that you are able to work legally while you are a student, and that your institution of choice offers opportunities around co-ops and internships, an exchange program, along with numerous avenues for networking. Additionally, if you’re curious about what the art, design and media post-secondary experience is like, a summer program is a great way to get a feel for it.
ECC: Why do students around the globe love Emily Carr University?
Ehren: A central location with stunning views, a community-focused campus with small class sizes, and a diverse student body of inspired creatives! As well, it’s an environment that supports the development of conceptual and technical capabilities, through an interdisciplinary focus that is rooted in collaboration and communication.
ECC: Name your favourite place that you’ve visited so far, and why.
Ehren: A fellow recruiter once noted that this question is like asking a parent who their favourite child is – even if you could name one, it would likely change on a daily basis. That said, if I was asked to choose today, I would list the following for these reasons:
- food – Bangkok, Thailand and Lima, Peru
- architecture – Mexico City
- street art – Berlin, Germany and Bogotá, Colombia
- markets – Quito, Ecuador and Istanbul, Turkey
- people – everywhere!!
