Celebrating Creativity | SIM Centre
In September of 2014, the SIM Centre partnered with The Next Big Thing Foundation, an initiative connected with Hootsuite that supports a group of 10 young entrepreneurs forming companies in the area of disruptive technology and/or social innovation. The S3D Centre and the 3D Innovation Center (3DIC) in Berlin, Germany became partners in late August 2014. Both institutes have a rich history in stereoscopic 3D, virtual reality and advanced imaging projects and expertise, which will lead to sharing of research and resources; collaborations; co-presentations; advocating for academic, business and personal adoption of advanced imaging tools and concepts, visual and immersive technologies; and, possible future student exchanges. In April, student Chenny Xia (’14) was announced as part of The Next36. Along with 35 other finalists, Chenny was chosen from 1000 enterprising young applicants to participate in an entrepreneurship-immersion program. Chenny was the only designer her cohort. Her selection marks the first time a specialized art and design school has been represented in this program. 
You may recall in Fall 2013 Kate Armstrong, Director of the SIM Centre at Emily Carr University, launched an exciting new partnership with Vancouver-based startup accelerator GrowLab.
Last year, Communication Design alumni Alvin Kwan and Vince Lo (’11), along with Ben Wu (SFU), decided to get together, pool their talents and come up with a project that would contribute to their community. The catch ─ they had to come up with something with a zero-dollar budget.
