Academic Advising

Academic Advisors are here to support students in achieving their academic goals. They are available to work with you to develop an educational plan; help you resolve academic problems, conflicts and concerns; understand university policies; and let you know about resources available at Emily Carr. The Aboriginal Program Office

The Aboriginal Program Office provides academic and cultural support to students with Aboriginal ancestry. The Aboriginal program manager assists with the promotion and coordination of events and workshops related to Aboriginal art and culture, and provides information on Aboriginal awards, scholarships and other funding sources.

Cooperative Education + Career Services

The university offers a Cooperative Education Program for work experience directly related to the fields of media arts, visual arts and design. Students can enhance their education and their professional development, while receiving up to 9 credits toward their Emily Carr degree. Co-operative education is available to third and fourth year undergraduate students.

Career Services connects students and alumni with employers in a variety of creative sectors. Students and alumni can access an online database with 40-60 new jobs posted each week.

Counselling

The Counselling Office provides counselling and therapy for personal problems and/or mental health issues. This is an opportunity for students to speak and be heard in an effort to gain clarity, strengthen personal resources, develop new strategies and help build self-esteem. Counselling is free of charge to all enrolled Emily Carr students and is strictly confidential.

Disability Services

The Disability Service Office provides services to and prepares Accommodation Notices for students with speech, hearing, visual, physical, mental health and neurological disabilities (learning, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders), as well as chronic health conditions and acquired brain injury.

Faculty will accommodate students who have established their eligibility by evaluation with Disability Services and who present an Accommodation Notice at the beginning of the semester, and no later than three weeks before the first scheduled test/exam or assignment requiring accommodation.

Health + Safety

Emily Carr University is committed to providing a healthy and safe environment for all students. International Education Office

The International Education Office offers services to help facilitate success in the learning and creative processes and to support international students in their adjustment to the Canadian educational experience. The office assists with off-campus housing, immigration, medical insurance information, cultural adjustment and orientation to the university. The office also provides welcome receptions in September and January, and ongoing international student advising. www.ecuad.ca/studentservices/international

The International Education Office also coordinates the exchange program for students in their third year. The exchange program is an opportunity to enrich and internationalize your education through a semester abroad. www.ecuad.ca/studentservices/exchange

Library

The Library provides access to a unique collection of diverse resources including books, journals, exhibition catalogues, electronic resources, slides and digital images, films, videos and DVDs, sound effects, artist books, the university archives, and a menu collection. Students’ Union

The Students’ Union works to protect the rights of students while advocating for the interests of its members. Volunteers are always needed to lobby and campaign with the Students’ Union and Canadian Federation of Students (CFS). These efforts have proven effective in making changes and increasing awareness on a host of different issues affecting students.

Writing Centre

The Writing Centre works with students from all program areas and can help at every stage of the writing process, from understanding an assignment and brainstorming to final revision and proofreading. The Writing Centre offers one-on-one support for undergraduate and graduate students who would like to improve their writing and critical thinking skills as well as their overall confidence in writing. The Writing Centre believes that every writer needs a reader.
